What is Boxes?

If you’ve ever seen the movie “The Big Short,” there’s a part where the misfits that figured out what was going just prior to the crash of 2008 were screaming about the end of the world. Yeah, well this time it’s for real. There will be no saving it this time.

Meanwhile, governments have all gone completely nuts. Countries have locked down entire populations without thinking of even the most obvious, simple basic consequences, like how is the next generation, now locked in their homes in the U.K. and other countries for instance, going to learn the skills necessary to take the reins of the global economy?

How are people going to fall in love and get married and have children if they have to wear masks all the time and never see a human face?

Given the rise of prediction markets, this week arguably represents the most frenzied campaign since the historic PASPA decision in 2018. Buttressed by massive capital injection from substantial funding rounds, operators have spent handsomely on celebrity endorsements. Over the last week, ads featuring LeBron James, Sydney Sweeney, Marshawn Lynch and Jeremy Piven have showered the airwaves. Even Pete Sampras, who disappeared from the public spotlight for the better part of two decades, resurfaced in a US Open spot for Kalshi.

While Polymarket pulled off a coup with the signings of James, Eli Manning and Derek Jeter, a Novig ad featuring Sweeney arguably received as much fanfare. Sweeney, an Emmy Award-nominated actress known for her role in HBO’s Euphoria series, stars in the spot titled “Just Sports.” As of Friday afternoon, the Novig post on social media platform X received at least nine million views.

Throughout the ad, Novig throws shade on its rivals for offering niche markets on events such as the timeframe for when traders believe that Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro will be removed from office. Unlike operators such as Kalshi and Polymarket, Novig has opted to limit its offerings to purely sports. “No betting on wars, or deaths…or politics,” Sweeney mused.

“We think there needs to be stronger regulations into the predictive markets,” he said. “We want to see that to protect the integrity of our game – we want to make sure we are protecting the consumers that are on those platforms.”

Despite a rapid ascension throughout the US, Kalshi has been relatively mum on potential international expansion down the road. There is some sentiment that Kalshi will wait to build abroad until after the completion of an initial public offering. At present, Kalshi has sought a valuation of around $44 billion.

Kalshi has imposed strict protocols for customer sign-up, which includes proof of US residency, along with a US tax identification number. The operator also requires traders to complete a robust know-your-customer check before trading on its site.
